The freedom of the press and the media stands as one of the paramount values enshrined within our nation’s Constitution. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan considers itself fundamentally obligated to the protection and further strengthening of this principle. It is with great satisfaction that we can assert that, in comparison to the countries of our region, the status of media and freedom of expression in Afghanistan is in an exemplary state.
Regrettably, our beloved country today stands on the front lines of the global struggle against international terrorism, facing unfortunate incidents and violent terrorist acts daily. In this context, some members of the media—who strive to fortify the principle of free expression—have endured significant hardships and risks, and in certain instances, have been subjected to direct violence.
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is committed to fostering an increasingly conducive environment for the growth of freedom of expression. We view the media, as the representative of this fundamental right of the people, to be the "eyes and ears" of society. Consequently, the protection of media outlets, their staff, and journalists is regarded as one of our primary duties.
While the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan reaffirms its commitment to supporting the free activity of the media and ensuring their access to information within the framework of the law, we call upon the media to fulfill their national and patriotic mission with careful consideration of the supreme national interests and the current exigencies of the country. They must ensure that the enemies of our land are granted no opportunity to sow seeds of division among our nation.
