Keypoints:
- Constitutional Mandate: Press freedom as a constitutional duty, not only a right.
- The Frontline of Information: Journalists as frontline actors facing risks in conflict.
- Media as the “Eyes and Ears”: Media recognized as essential for governance and public awareness.
- The Responsibility of Truth: Freedom balanced with national interest and unity.
Freedom of the press and media constitutes one of the paramount values of our nation's Constitution, and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan considers itself mandated to protect and further strengthen this pillar. It is with great satisfaction that we can state that the freedom of media and expression in Afghanistan holds a superior standing compared to other countries in the region.
Regrettably, our beloved country today stands on the frontlines of the global struggle against international terrorism, facing unfortunate and violent terrorist incidents daily. In this environment, media professionals—who work to uphold and strengthen this principle—have endured significant hardships and risks, and in several instances, have been subjected to violence.
The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has consistently strived to bolster a conducive environment for the growth of freedom of expression. We view the media, as the representatives of this fundamental right of the people, as the "eyes and ears" of society. Consequently, the protection of media outlets, their staff, and journalists is regarded as one of the state's core responsibilities.
While the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan remains committed to supporting the free activity of the media and their access to information within the framework of the law, it calls upon the media to fulfill their national and patriotic mission with due regard for the supreme national interests and the current exigencies of the country. This mission must be carried out in a manner that denies the enemies of our land any opportunity to sow division and discord among our nation.
